Mayor Ron Meer
Mayor of Michigan City, Indiana
As the Mayor of the City of Michigan City, and on behalf of our citizens and businesses, I am honored to welcome you to our community. Michigan City, located in beautiful LaPorte County and on the shores of America’s largest freshwater lake, is a sportsman’s paradise. We not only have wonderful dunes and countless recreational opportunities, but with our excellent infrastructure such as expressways, railways, airports, and business parks. We are a city with endless potential for business and economic growth.
Spearheaded by the award winning Lake Michigan Gateway Implementation Strategy, Michigan City’s renaissance is quickly becoming recognized as a model of “how to” for other Midwestern communities in their revitalization efforts. Our Uptown Arts District is anchored by Indiana’s first Artspace, a forty-four artist live/work space, a $13 million renovation project. Michigan City is working to put her best foot forward. This is an exciting time as we promote Michigan City with our new “Create, Play, Repeat” brand which focuses on the numerous cultural and recreational assets we have to offer our citizens and visitors.
We have had many recent successes, too numerous to list. Real estate developers are demonstrating confidence in the market as Holladay Properties broke ground on a 64,000 square foot spec building – the first of three planned projects. A newly constructed, state of the art $10 million police station opened in July of 2016. In late 2016, construction began on a new Franciscan Health hospital and campus. This $230 million investment will provide our community with a vibrant state of the art medical facility visibly located on the main south gateway into our city. In addition, construction has commenced on 95,000 square foot assisted living facility known as Silver Birch of Michigan City, a $20 million capital investment. As Mayor, I am excited for these healthcare based developments and am encouraged at the possibilities that other medical related facilities will be calling Michigan City home.
Earlier in 2017, I was proud to introduce the Michigan City Promise Scholarship, which will pay up to $5,000 per student, renewable for 4 years of college tuition for qualifying students at Michigan City High School. Michigan City Promise Scholarship will cultivate economic development, promote families and invest in our greatest natural resource, our children.
I am excited about the City of Michigan City future and I invite you to explore all that community has to offer.
Ron Meer, Mayor
